Republican, Alaska State Senate, District A
Member, Legislative Advisory Board
Bert Stedman is a Republican member of the Alaska State Senate, representing Senate District A in Southeast Alaska, a region that includes Ketchikan, Sitka, Petersburg, Wrangell, and Yakutat. Governor Frank Murkowski appointed him to the Senate in 2003, and he won his first election to the seat in 2004. He co-chairs the Senate Finance Committee, the post from which he directs much of the chamber’s budget work, a role he has held across several legislatures since 2007. His other assignments include the Senate Rules Committee, Senate Transportation, the Legislative Budget and Audit Committee, Legislative Council, and the Special Committee on World Trade.
Before entering the legislature, Stedman spent roughly three decades in the financial services industry, running an investment services firm, and he served in Sitka’s local government. A fourth-generation Alaskan raised in Petersburg and Sitka, he is known in Juneau for his command of taxation, public finance, and state budgeting. That expertise bears directly on energy. Alaska funds much of its government from petroleum revenue, and as Finance co-chair Stedman helps shape the oil and gas production tax and the fiscal framework that governs resource development in the state. His work on energy taxation and Alaska’s resource economy aligns with CSA’s focus on domestic energy security.
