Amy Sinclair

Republican, Iowa State Senate, District 12
Member, Legislative Advisory Board

Amy Sinclair is a Republican member of the Iowa Senate representing District 12, which covers Wayne County and surrounding south-central Iowa. She first won election to the Senate in 2012 and took office in January 2013, and she has served as President of the Iowa Senate since January 2023, a post to which her colleagues re-elected her in January 2025. She previously served as Assistant Majority Leader and as Senate Majority Whip. Her committee work includes the Education Committee, the Rules and Administration Committee, where she serves as Vice Chair, and the Legislative Council.

Before the legislature, Sinclair was a family farmer in Wayne County and served two terms on the county Board of Supervisors. She holds an Associate of Arts degree from Indian Hills Community College and remains active in the Wayne County Farm Bureau. Her agricultural background ties directly to energy security: Iowa is the nation’s largest producer of ethanol and a leading state for wind generation, and its farm economy is closely bound to biofuels and renewable power. As the officer who presides over the Senate and helps set its agenda, Sinclair holds a position of influence over energy and agricultural policy in one of the country’s most consequential energy-producing states.
